New foundations - Jamal’s story

Jamal relocated to the UK from Afghanistan with his family and was referred to the Restart Scheme for support with rebuilding his career and life in the UK.

With a background in construction, he brought valuable experience and skills but needed support with English language and navigating the UK job market to reestablish himself and settle into his new community.

For refugees like Jamal, access to ESOL is vital with helping them integrate into their communities, gain independence, and steps towards sustainable employment.

During his initial appointment he met with Employment Adviser, Josh, who got to know him on a more personal level, discussing his situation, work experience, and future job goals. It was identified that Jamal would benefit from ESOL classes and so Josh prioritised this.

Josh told us: “Jamal’s language barrier posed a significant challenge, however, recognising this obstacle, he focused all his energy on improving his English skills, knowing this was key to landing better opportunities.

“Alongside college, Jamal spent countless hours learning through YouTube videos and surrounding himself with English speakers. He immersed himself in the language as much as possible, practicing whenever he could. His dedication and persistence paid off as his confidence and fluency steadily improved.”

Josh continued to meet with Jamal on a weekly basis, and together they created a high standard CV that highlighted all his qualities, skills and experience. Josh provided funding for Jamal to complete a course for his CSCS card, meaning he would be able to begin applying for jobs in construction.

The Restart Scheme continues to support participants financially on their journey into employment, this may cover travel costs, external courses, interview clothing or PPE, this ensures that transitioning back into work doesn’t financially impact the participant.

During his time on the Restart Scheme, Jamal received tailored guidance, training opportunities, and assistance with job applications, helping him to take confident steps towards re-entering the construction industry. In addition to his language studies and qualification efforts, Jamal attended several different workshop sessions, each one contributing to his ongoing personal and professional development.

“Jamal’s hard work and persistence have finally paid off. With his English language skills significantly improved, his CSCS card in hand, and his driving test booked, Jamal has recently secured a job in the construction sector. His story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of persistence.” Said Josh.
